While male writers like Petrarch, Boccaccio, and Chaucer frame the Griselda story with interpretive commentary, Christine strips the story of embellishment in order to focus attention on Griselda’s eloquence and her suffering at the will of her cruel husband. Just as Griselda is clothed and unclothed as she shifts in status within the story, so is the Griselda narrative itself rhetorically unclothed as Christine retells it.
